Introduction[编辑]

Pineapple Bun with Butter (菠蘿油, literal translation: Pineapple Oil) is a unique variation of Pineapple Bun, made from a Pineapple Bun sliced horizontally with a thick piece of butter or cream in between. The best Pineapple Bun with Butter is made with fresh, hot buns just out of the oven and butter that is chilled with ice. The butter would then be melted by the temperature of the bun and infused into the bun itself, turning the bun into a golden yellow color inside. This could also ensure that the butter would be spread more evenly and the taste of butter would be consistent throughout the bun. Due to the butter, this bun would contain more fat and cholesterol when compared with Pineapple Buns.

Many Hong Kong Cha chaan tengs would have a set of Pineapple Bun with Butter sold with milk tea, served as an afternoon tea set or a breakfast set. Some Cha chaan tengs would also serve the butter with ice, ensuring that the ice stays chilled when put into the mouth, which creates starker contrast between the hotness of the bun, and coldness of the butter, creating a unique taste that is very different to Pineapple Buns.

The origin of buttered pineapple bun is unknown. One claim is that Cha chaan tengs gained inspiration from podcast. Broadcaster incidentally invented a Cantonese term 冰火菠蘿油 ‘bing foh boh loh yau,’ (literal meaning: ice-fire pineapple oil), which means placing a slide of iced butter into the bun to produce both cold and hot feeling when someone is eating. (Citation needed). Some other claims concern commercial needs. For example, while a cook grabbed a pineapple bun and to allay his hunger, he tried to add a slide of butter beside him into the bun.1 There were also some sayings that buttered pineapple bun originated from Russia, since the pineapple buns in Hong Kong didn’t have the puff pastry back then.

Variation[编辑]

There are different kinds of Pineapple Bun with Butter nowadays. Some Cha Chaan Teng will put two pieces of butter into the bun. Or to be more innovative such as Pineapple bun with butter, tomato and egg. And put pork steak and butter inside the bun. Some restaurants will fuse the pineapple Bun with butter and other popular desserts or ingredients such as ice cream. But the classic one is still the most common and popular one.
